Brandon was going into the eigth grade and was reading at a third grade level. He had very little phonemic awareness and would guess at words instead of attempting to sound them out. He had been diagnosed with dyslexia, so his parents paid for a private tutor to come to their house every afternoon to help him with his homework. In addtition, they paid for him to attend private school so that he could get some special help. Still, he was failing several of his classes.
Brandon was willing to work, which is remarkable conidering all of the academic failures he had experienced. He had been given so many academic activities that just didn't work for him and he was feeling lost. He got excited when he wasn't asked to do academic work but instead do brain retraining, gross motor skills activities, and visual processing worksheets. When he was presented with an activity he would say, "Sweet!"
Progress was swift for Brandon. At the end of two months he was reading at a fifth grade level. That is a jump of two grade levels! He had learned to sound out words instead of guessing at them and this affected both comprehension and fluency. This carried over into his other subjects such as science and history because he was better able to understand the content area. Brandon's confidence grew and his grades started shooting up.
