To Label or Not to Label
Throughout many of the seminars Lisa has put on, the question of labeling has come up. It seems there's no perfect answer as to whether labeling a child with a disability has a more beneficial or a more detrimental effect.
In "Am I Dyslexic" she points out that if a child has struggled for a long time and suspicions of dyslexia arise then a professional evaluation and discovery may be a good thing as the child can get some relief from the pervasive thoughts that they be unintelligent. The same can be true for alleviating the parents pain.
However there can also be detrimental effects. It can become a crutch or put the child in danger of bullying.
Lisa has stated that she made the choice to not tell her own children of their own diagnosis and she feels it was the right choice as they now live healthy happy lives. She simply attacked the problem with Neuro-sensory educational therapy and stayed consistent with it until academic success was acheived.
