Is Your Child Talented and Learning Abled?

All of us here at www.learning-aids.com are constantly talking about the overlooked talents of kids with different
learning differences. It's something we constantly notice but to tell the truth we don't focus on it much when
it comes to do something with it.

Does your child have one of these hidden talents?

There's always so much going on.
We're always focussing on what these children have a hard time with.
We really very easily forget about their talents.
And sometimes their talents are just amazing.

Many of the great people in history have had learning differences.
Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, and Amadeus Mozart may have been on the autism spectrum.
The list of famous people with dyslexia would include Alexander Graham Bell, Agatha Christie, Cher, and many more.

Children Taking Psychoactive Medication

The rate of children being prescribed psychoactive drugs is alarming. Parents are being told by school teachers and psychologists, along with doctors, that children that are active need to take psychoactive drugs in order to prevent delinquent behaviors and/or failure in schools. Some parents are even forced to put their child on medication under threats of an authority figure calling children services to report abuse by the parent. Schools will refer parents to doctors that support the use of psychoactive drugs to control a child’s behavior.

Talking with Your Child's Teacher about Behavior Problems

Talking with your child's teacher regarding behavior problems your young child is having is always difficult. Parents often find it far easier to approach the conference angry or defensive, but those meetings are rarely productive. Put aside the anger, anxiety and fear and consider the teacher and your child as allies learning to work together.

Before the Meeting

Take some time before the conference to seek information from your child and perhaps your child's school friends. Get the child's point of view, opinions and facts.

Ask when the problems seemed to have started. Was there some event in the child's life around that time? Is he acting out in rebellion, confusion or pain?

Dyslexia and Bullying

Academics is not the only problem dyslexics can have in school. Bullying can often be a big issue. Bullies will find any difference and make it a reason for bullying. Learning disabilities are an easy target.

"The difficulties with reading, writing, and spelling are bad enough, but add bullying on top of all that and the effects can be devastating for the child’s sense of accomplishment and self-esteem."

Bully is a serious issue that can not only affect self esteem but it can also affect academics. Bullying has seen a lot national attention lately with so many suicides. It is certainly something to be watchful for.

"Suicidal Tendencies Bullying is beginning to receive wider notice and has been found to bring on depression and even suicidal tendencies in some children, and there’s always an accompanying drop in the child’s academic performance. "

Not All Learning Disabilities are the Same

One thing Lisa has mentioned over and over that everyone who suffers from any sort of LD experiences it differently. There is no exact definition for any of them. This post by a dyscalculic is a great example

"The realisation that I couldn't see images in my mind was quite a surprising one; probably because I thought something this major would have been noticed, least of all by me in the 25 years in which I have been conscious!"

Feeling a bit cheated since most dyscalculics exhibit strong visualization abilities. But it's interesting to note that the poster is an artist.

"My introspection on this came after reading several self-help books on dyslexia, all of which emphasised how great dyslexic/dyscalculic people are at visualisation and how this great faculty makes up for the verbal/ numerical deficits. They even propagated that the strength of the minds eye was  the reason that so many people with learning difficulties go on to do great creative things. After reading this time and time again, I felt cheated and robbed - where was my great visual faculty? This is what initiated my journey of introspection on the minds eye and also uncovered the surprising discovery that my visual faculty was not in the least 'superior' but almost non existent."

It's an interesting read you might take a look at.

New Zealand Ministry of Education Finally Recognizes that Dyslexia Exists. Up until this point Dyslexia has not officially existed. Now that it exists there's much work to be done. Implementing programs, etc.
