Hello,

My name is Lisa Harp. I have been an educator, certified teacher, and educational therapist for almost thirty years.

I've also had my own children struggle in school.

Having a child who is struggling in school is one of the most difficult of all problems. I should know. I experienced the same thing with my own son when he was young.

I was a certified teacher at the time and was so frustrated with the schools, unsure of which way to turn, and even worse, disappointed in him. I’m sure that he also felt this disappointment on some level. I still feel guilty about that.

Well, the good news is that my son is in college now and doing great. Those difficult school days of long ago are forgotten and we have grown closer. He is even the Director of Learning now at the Lodi Harp Learning Institute. But my son is the exception to the rule. I found the information I needed to help him excel. Most do not. I'd like to tell you how I did it.

Having a Child Struggle in School Can Be Extremely Painful

AnxietyIt can be extremely emotionally draining. Not knowing where to turn or how to help is frustrating. Dealing with the mixed emotions of love for the child and embarrassment at what is going on academically can cause feelings of guilt.

It seems that there is despair and depression every step of the way when your dreams for your child have been crushed.

Learning Problems Seem to Cause Constant Problems!

When a child struggles at learning, so much time is wasted on activities that just shouldn't take so long. Getting homework done can take forever. On top of that there may be battles over homework or a child may just retreat. Both the child and the parent get that pit of nervousness in their stomach when homework time comes around? It is no wonder! If you child has been struggling in school, then coming home to more school work is the least appealing thing in the world, and, because your child is familiar with you and trusts you, he/she will often lash out at you.

I know that is what happened with my own son. I dreaded doing homework with him, because it took three hours every night to get it done. I begged, pleaded, scolded, and bribed. But none of it worked. His frustration reared it's ugly head every night, and he was letting me know in no uncertain terms that he had had enough.

Homework should not last more than an hour for elementary aged students.

If it does, then this is an indication that a problem is occurring. Most likely, the student is weak in eye/hand coordination, visual processing, and basic memory skills. These are all correctable skills!

Most people think that if the student just practices a little bit more then it will sink in. That repetition alone will cure a learning issue, but this is not true at all. As a matter of fact it can be a recipe for disaster. Imagine, if you were running incorrectly and entered a marathon. You came in last place because you were so slow. You continued to practice running, but still in incorrect form. You kept practicing and kept placing last, because you were running wrong.

Would it have occurred to you to hire a coach? If you had hired a coach, then you would have learned how to move correctly, how to run in proper formation, the proper exercises to build the muscles necessary to win a marathon. And you just might have won! Or at least, you would have placed better than last.

Report Cards

Report card time is terrible for the parent and the child. Children dread bringing home a report card with D’s and F’s. They hate it when the other kids call them names. Even worse, they hate it when their parents go to bat for them, because it makes them feel all the worse.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Just hearing that your child is below grade level can be devastating. It is so frustrating when you know your child is smart yet they are having trouble in school. To know that your child knows information and then bombs a test. To go to parent teacher conferences and face the embarrassment of a lecture on what your child does not know. All of these are terrible experiences.

And then trying to communicate with the school and the teacher can be even more difficult. Schools really aren't designed to help the struggling learner. It can be like beating your head against a wall.

Problems Seem to Crop up Everywhere.

Learning difficulties just seem to cause problems in all aspects of life. They suck up family time and cause friction. They make everything difficult. Even at social functions it can be very embarrassing when other parents are bragging about their child's academic achievements and you've got nothing to say.

Have you ever thought about what a day at school might be like for a child with a learning difference? Can you imagine, just for a minute, what it must feel like to not be able to keep up with what the teacher is saying, to not understand what the questions on the papers mean, to feel like you are dumb when everybody else seems to be “getting” the answers and all you get are more questions?

Can you imagine what it must be like if the numbers and letters are moving around on a page? If for one second the letter looks like a b and the next second it looks like a d? Can you imagine what a day would be like if you had auditory processing problems and every word the teacher said sounded like it was in a long tunnel? If your neighbor’s pencil sounded like it was scraping against your skin instead of the paper? If you could hear the computer churning away in the background to such a degree that the teacher’s words are drowned out?

There are so many other things that can happen to a student with a learning difference. This is just a tip of the iceberg. But can you understand how hard it would be to spend six hours like this? And then to go home to face your parents’ disappointment? This scene plays out every day for children who are struggling in school.
And, they don’t just struggle in school. They struggle in life. They wish that they could be as “smart” as their friends. They dread bringing home a report card with D’s and F’s. They hate it when the other kids call them names. Even worse, they hate it when their parents go to bat for them, because it makes them feel all the worse.

Is It The Teachers Responsibility?

Do you get frustrated whenever you go to your child’s school? Do you wonder if your child is even being helped? Has the teacher or principal put the emphasis of your child’s education on you instead of actually helping your child?

I hear complaints like this all of the time. And it makes me sad, because I experienced the same problems with my own son when he was struggling in school. Some teachers were really good and spent extra time with him. Others made him feel bad, and he closed up. I talked to the principal. I went to meetings. I met with the teachers. I volunteered in his class. I did everything I knew to do with him.

And then it occurred to me that I was a certified teacher with over ten years of classroom experience (at the time), and I had no real tools to help my child succeed in school. Sadly, I realized the schools were in the same boat.

You see, my son had ADD, dyslexia, and visual and auditory processing problems. Even if I had chosen the special education route, which I didn’t, he still wouldn’t have been “fixed”. And this is why. The schools are set up to deal with academics. It isn’t their job to go into processing of information, deal with the brain or the senses, or to still movements and motion in the mind.

Experts in another field have to do this. And that is what I did. I took classes, learned about learning differences, and researched every night. I found out that there is a lot that can be done for kids with learning problems, but that I had better not depend on the schools to do it.

I set out on my own journey with my son. I took a bold step and pulled him out of school in the 5th grade and set up my own curriculum for him. We had light academics but a huge plate of visual, auditory, spatial, perceptual, and cognitive skills. I took the pressure off of him and rebuilt his learning systems one step at a time.

wrongBefore figuring out what to do I was totally lost and doing all the wrong things. I was a certified teacher, and when my own child revealed symptoms of a learning problem, I just couldn’t accept it. I blamed the schools. I made him do extra workbooks. I broke out the flashcards and forced him to memorize his math facts. It was all I knew to do. I made these mistakes and I had an education in education.
I was a certified teacher, and when my own child revealed symptoms of a learning problem, I just couldn’t accept it. I blamed the schools. I made him do extra workbooks. I broke out the flashcards and forced him to memorize his math facts. It was all I knew to do.

If teachers are not trained to do this then how can the parents be expected to know what to do? The information is just not readily available. Well, unless you're a brain scientist that is.

Does It Feels Like You've Tried everything?

The first thing that most parents and teachers do to try to solve the problem is to add more academic practice. If reading is the problem then they try more reading practice. If math is the problem then most will assume that more math practice will solve it. They break out the flash cards and just keep trying.

But if it's not working, more of the same just won't help. Albert Einstein told us that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting the same results. Yet so many people do just that and don't realize that what they are doing can actually make things worse.

IEP's

Schools and teachers will often recommend an IEP. In some cases this can be helpful. But in many cases it will cause far more problems than it solves. If it solves any problems at all. After signing an IEP parents are often horrified to find out that their child is just being warehoused. The children are given work to keep them busy but not work that will actually help them. Once in an IEP they can be stuck. An IEP is a legally binding contract. Schools get more money for special education so it may be in their interest to get a child on an IEP even if it's not in the child's best interest. Be careful of IEP's.

After School Tutoring

While after school tutoring can be helpful AFTER learning issues have been corrected it might actually do harm if the child is not prepared for it. It's the same as just piling on more homework. Too much work and the child just fatigues. If there is a problem they'll fatigue faster and just get frustrated.

They may even decide that they are not intelligent. Once that happens and it affects their self esteem the problem has just been compounded. Now you have not only a learning problem but you'll have to build up the child's self esteem before they can be successful. If they've reached a point where anxiety sets in they then go into fight or flight mode. The brain basically shuts down to learning altogether because they are stressed. Learning is impossible at this stage.

This can all be caused by piling on more academics without addressing the core problems.

Learning Centers

Most of the widely advertised learning centers are also more of the same. They are well funded so you hear their commercials on the radio and see them on television. Since they have highly polished advertisements and modern facilities many parents will assume they are the answer. But most are more academic practice with a high price tag. I've seen parents take out second mortgages on their family home to pay for these and still have no results other than debt. Be careful with these. You can end up with far worse problems than you started with.

Specialized Schools

While there are a few neuro-sensory focused specialized schools out there you have to watch out that a specialized school is just a place with higher levels of acceptance. Acceptance is good but not at the cost of solutions. This path is much like the IEP. The child is warehoused and never really learns. In the long run this is not a good solution for the child's future.

Computer Programs

Some people have tried using computer programs to enhance learning. There are many of them out there and they are sold in many ways. The idea that you can plop your child down in front of the computer and the problem is fixed is very appealing. Unfortunately this is probably not the solution.

Learning comes from the outside in. It starts with the body and moves inward. Motor skills, sensory input that involves multiple senses, cross lateral motions. These are the things that develop learning. Part of the problem is that many children get to much screen time (computers and television) and not enough play time in the real world. You see, most of the exercises needed to fix learning problems involve the body. Many need to be done on paper. They are tactile in nature. Your just not going to get that from a computer.

Orton-Gillingham and Other Approaches

These approaches have been around a long time and there is some benefit to them. But the problem is that they've been around a long time and they are based on outdated research. What scientists have learned about the brain is completely different than what they thought when these programs were developed.

But There Is A Solution

What would life be like if you could fix your child's learning difficulties? How would it feel to have more free time because you're not fighting to get homework done? What would it feel like to go to a parent teacher conference and hear praise from the teacher telling you how joyful it is to have your child in their class and how well they exceed at things?

What if you didn't have to deal with IEP's?

How much time and suffering would that save you?

For my son and I it was life changing. My son is in college now and doing great. I can tell you it feels fantastic! Those difficult school days of long ago are forgotten and we have grown closer. He is even the Director of Learning now at the Lodi Harp Learning Institute and looking forward to a successful career.

When children become successful at learning they are changed forever. They are like completely different kids. They develop the attitude of “I can do anything.” Confidence levels soar. They give the extra effort with her schoolwork because learning becomes easy. They do a total 360.

It feels nothing short of INCREDIBLE!

The whole family is happier. No more conflicts at homework time and because those conflicts fade away others can fade away with them. How would it feel when your child brings home a report card with straight A's? Can you imagine that gleam in their eye's as they come in the door?

How would it feel to actually brag about your child's straight A's?

How would it feel to replace guilt with pride?

And if you saved money while accomplishing that you'd probably feel even better.

I've Been There and I know How It Feels to Have a Child With Learning Problems.

I also Know How it Feels to Turn That Around.

I was a certified teacher, and when my own child revealed symptoms of a learning problem, I just couldn’t accept it. I blamed the schools. I made him do extra workbooks. I broke out the flashcards and forced him to memorize his math facts. It was all I knew to do.

One day I realized that what I was doing just wasn’t working. I went on a mission to help my son. And do you know, within a year of using the methods I discovered, he became an honor roll student.

We, as a society, know more about the brain now than ever. Brain science has completely changed in the last decade. And we have a vast knowledge of the senses and how they affect learning. The problem was that no one took the research that was available and created a system with it. Sure the scientists have known how to correct these problems but the information wasn't put in the right hands. I decided to do just that. I researched and researched. I put together a system that actually attacked the problem. It worked for my son and it has worked for thousands of students since then.

After experiencing the frustration first hand of a child who was struggling in school, and being met with enormous success with the methods I used to help him, I created a program that could help all students, whether they were just behind a little bit in school or suffered from severe learning issues. I have used current brain research mixed with cutting edge approaches to correcting learning differences that work. I am glad to be able to share these approaches with you and your child.

With learning issues on the rise, it has become essential that this system get into the right hands. It imperative to give these children the tools they need to succeed in the modern American classroom. That's why I've made it available in a format that parents can do at home with their children. It's been a secret for too long. This secret needs to get out!

Neuro-Sensory Educational Therapy

It's a long word but it's actually quite simple in practice. I've put the whole system together in a format you can do at home with your child. These are exercises you do with your child. It's not a computer program. They are exercises done on paper or with the body. They are exercises that you can guide your child through.

You can get them on DVD or online in our online program. You watch the videos to learn how to teach your child to do the exercises and then you guide your child through them. Believe it or not your child will actually enjoy the exercises. They are actually fun.

The exercises are designed to emphasize the building blocks of learning:

  • The brain takes in information from the senses
  • If there is a problem in one of the sensory areas, then a breakdown occurs
  • By combining brain and sensory activities, the student learns how to learn
  • Academic success is then met

Exercises are designed to build learning abilities. Cognitive training, visual processing, kinesthetic/ eye-hand coordination. These are all necessary for learning success. The program starts small and slowly builds these skills.

How Long Does it Take?

I am often asked how much time you need to spend on activities to enhance learning ability. Usually you will spend about 20 to 30 minutes a day. Once a week a full brain retraining is done, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes. That's it! Far less than the time wasted now!

If you are one of the parents who is afraid to dive in and help your child, then don't be. Who better than you is equipped to help your child? All you have to do is open a binder, look at a picture or read the easy instructions and have your child do the activities for about 20 minutes. School success doesn't have to be hard.

In about three months you should start seeing results. At first they will be subtle but they'll increase from there. Every child is different but most will be at grade level and beyond in 12-18 months. I've seen children that were several grade levels behind reach grade level and beyond in a year to a year and a half. From D's and F's to A's and B's
Once you set your child on the path of success they are there for life. They become confident in their skills and learning becomes easy.

Success Breeds Success

Once they are on the right track they'll discover more successes. Success breeds more success and confidence breeds more confidence. Your child will go from frustrated and depressed to happy and energetic.

The domino effect is reversed. Instead of a downward spiral of falling further and further behind and dealing with more and more problems the opposite happens. Children become more confident in themselves and take on bigger and more challenging things. They learn that they can succeed and do.

Family life becomes easier without all of the struggles and you can be a proud parent with a child that succeeds.

Many people have asked if this also works with adults. It does. The brain has plasticity at any age and although some of the exercises may seem childish they actually work for adults. We've even used the same program to help stroke victims. Their brains have plasticity just like anyone else.

Getting To The Root Of The Problem Is The Only Answer

Most other programs address the symptoms and not only fail but can make things worse. If you don't get to the root of the problem you never fix it.

  • Adding more academics is just more of the same
  • IEP and special schools are a band-aid and ensure that your child never gets a good education
  • After school tutoring and most learning centers are just more academics and that's not working
  • Computer programs are not tactile. More screen time is not the answer it's part of the problem
  • Popular programs are based on outdated science

So How Does This Whole Thing Work?

The program is divided into 12 sections. You'll receive one section per month. Go at your own pace. You'll know when to move on based on your child's performance. Depending on if you prefer to learn from the DVD's or watch online you'll either watch the how to videos on your television or computer. Also included is a CD of materials or download them from the online course. You'll print out the worksheets and watch the videos to learn how to use them with your child.

You use the videos. Not your child. The videos teach you how to work with your child. All of the exercises your child will do are either on the worksheets or they are physical exercises designed to rewire the brain or create stronger wiring.

The materials you'll need are very simple and easy to get. Dry erase markers, a white board, plastic sheet covers, even shaving cream. Mostly household items or items you can get at an office supply store.

Each exercise is designed to enhance a core learning process. Cognitive Training, visual processing, auditory processing, kinesthetic, and eventually academic.

Cognitive Training:

A series of targeted cognitive exercises are performed that rebuild neural pathways in the brain. This is done once a week. Once the left and right hemispheres of the brain can communicate with each other, activities that were once difficult become easy. For instance, since math is a left hemisphere activity, students who previously struggled in math can now learn and understand math skills and concepts.

Visual Processing:

Students learn to do a series of activities that help strengthen the eye muscles. Eyes can then move smoothly across the page. Proper eye alignment is also created through various activities. Perceptual skills are enhanced and reading becomes easy. Comprehension and fluency follow.

Auditory Processing:

Students learn to hear sounds and phonemes correctly as well as enhance auditory memory and discrimination skills. Once sounds are heard properly, reading and following directions becomes easier for the student. Frustration also decreases and temper tantrums over school work decrease.

Kinesthetic/Eye-Hand Coordination:

Gross motor skills are performed early in the program. Writing and fine motor skills can then develop. Many students are failing school simply because they cannot keep up with the writing portion of the school day. Few people know what to do about this. The exercises that enhance eye/hand coordination will help the student write easily and then be able to keep up with note taking and other writing skills that are required.

The Result:

  • Grades soar because the student can now learn
  • Self-confidence increases
  • The student becomes balanced and happy
  • Homework battles end
  • Grade level achievement is reached
  • Students can pass to the next grade
  • IEP's can be exited
  • Reading, writing, math, and spelling are no longer difficult

P.S. Do you think that your child might outgrow a learning problem? That it is just because of a bad teacher or poor curriculum? Do you wait for academic success to kick in and then feel embarrassed because your child is at the bottom of his/her class? Usually problems don't just solve themselves.

Rarely does a child outgrow a learning issue. And, each year that passes, the academic gap widens. This makes it all the more difficult to close. The problem compounds.

Early detection is key. But, never forget that the brain has plasticity at any age and that new neural pathways can be built in the brain, even if there is a severe problem, such as stroke or brain damage.

Step by step, we can build a new learning foundation for your child. We can strengthen gross motor skills, visual and auditory processing, and vital memory skills as well as fill in academic gaps. Piece by piece, students can be taught to learn. So school can be easy. So grades can soar. So homework does not have to be a battle.

P.P.S.
If your child is displaying symptoms of a learning difference, or if your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability or disorder, then you know that each day can be torture for your child. You want so badly to help your child, but you don’t know where to turn for help.

To start with, there is help available. Always remember that. And, second, never give up hope. There were days when I wanted to throw in the towel when my son came home from school and we were staring at hours of homework. I knew the battles would start and I dreaded the evening.
But, we made it through those times because I got help for him. At that time there was very little available, and I had to form my own program and regime for him. It's much easier for you now that this program is available.
